What is a V-Belt

2017-1-19      View:

V-belts are able to handle slippage and alignment issues. It is able to behave as a transmission belt.

V belts are able to give one the perfect combination of traction, load of the bearings, extended service life, and speed of movement. They are practically endless. Their main cross-section shape tends to be trapezoidal. This is a convex quadrilateral that has parallel sides. Hence, the name “V.”

The belt does not slip off as the “V” shape that the belt has tends to track precisely in a mating groove within the pulley or even sheave. A pulley is regarded as a wheel particularly on an axle or even shaft which is made so as to handle movement and alteration in the direction of a cable or belt specifically along its circumference.

The belt is capable of wedging into the groove when the load becomes greater. The more the load, the more the wedging action. This enhances torque transmission and also enables the V-belt to be a perfect choice that tends to require less width and tension in comparison to flat belts. Torque refers to the ability of a force to be able to rotate an object about an axis, pivot, or fulcrum.

V-belts are better than flat belts also due to their small center distances and high reduction ratios. A center distance that is regarded as being perfect tends to be more than the biggest pulley diameter. It also is typically lower than three times the exact sum of both the pulleys. The optimal speed range tends to be 1,000 to 7,000 ft/min. Due to their thicker cross-section in compassion to flat belts; V-belts require larger pulleys.

When high-power is needed, two or even more V-belts may be joined in a way that is typically side-by-side, precisely in an arrangement that is referred to as a multi-V. This tends to run on multi-groove sheaves that match. Multiple V-belt drives are what they are called.

One will be able to find V-belts that are either fully rubber or polymer. There are some that also contain fibers present in the rubber or even polymer that provide strength as well as reinforcement. Textiles materials are what the fibers can be made of, for example, cotton, polyamide like Nylon or polyester. If one wants more strength, then they can find the fibers that are steel or aramid.

If an endless belt is not required, then the jointed or link V-belts can be used. Most models give similar power and speed ratings like similarly sized endless belts. They do not need pulleys in order to function. A link V-belt characterizes some polyurethane or even polyester composite links that are held together. This can be by them, likeFenner Drives’ PowerTwist.

They can also be held together by metal studs, like Gates’ Nu-T-Link. One will be able to install these in an easy way and they also give enhanced environmental resistance in comparison to rubber belts. They are also length adjustable, which can be accomplished by disassembling and removing links when required.
